Will QuantumFilm help cell phones replace your digital camera?

So many of my favorite candid snapshots of the last few years have been taken on my iPhone (and apparently I’m not alone). But it’s so frustrating when I get that money shot and I know that the resolution and image quality won’t cut it for much more than posting on the Web. Well, California-based startup, InVisage Technologies, has announced a new technology that may change all that. Its QuantumFilm image sensors promise to enable high pixel count and/or higher sensitivity in low-light — in tiny form factors — allowing cell phone cameras to produce higher resolution, higher quality images.

The new image sensors employ quantum dot nanotechnology to capture between 90 to 95 percent of light, versus the average 25 percent captured by today’s silicon-based images sensors. For a detailed description of the new technology, see Stephen Shankland’s recent Deep Tech post about QuantumFilm.
